With Flicka, regaurdless of details of what happened, people instantly cried cruelty and are boycotting the film as a result. Its not surprising really, if it had happened on a private yard, there wouldn't have been any press, but because it was on a film set people were always going to say that it was down to cruelty and that horses shouldn't be used in films because its too dangerous for them. Some people will exploit anything.

true - but it was still not the brightest idea to have these horses out of control with 13 foot lines. They probably could have done the shoot a lot safer. Plus, think about it. That was someones horse that just died because of a saftey fault. If they have put a breakaway on the halter or something, the horse would have lived or at least not broken his neck.
Okay here are two other movies I love. Black Beauty was already mentioned, its really good (both the old version and the new, despite the fact that they are completely different stories)
The Horse In The Gray Flannel Suit...saw it as a kid and instantly loved it. What a classic. Such a good movie, I recommend it to everyone.

Yeah I know things could have been done better and it wasn't a smart thing to do, I'm not disputing that, just saying that if it had happened anywhere but a film set then no one but the people involved would care. What happened could have happened anywhere, anytime. What I see as wrong is people making such a big deal out of it and saying it was down to cruelty just because it happened on a film set.

I think the word people should use is stupidity. Its not cruel of them to use long leads and not make the halters safe and not control their horses better. It was stupid. I dont think people should boycott the film over it - even if 10,000 people boycott it, the production studios still make money and could probably care less. All in all, as long as they make money, they are happy. Its just how it goes.
I think they should have gone about it smarter, but accidents happen. Cem, I think you are right to say that there wouldnt be so much hype if it were anywhere but a filming site, but the truth is thats where it happened and people reacted how they did. People do stupid things everyday. I guess we just have to let it go.
