...and heres why...
two days ago, my mom was riding Lucas (her favorite FAVORITE horse that shes had since he was a baby green and she was in her senior year of college) out on the cross country course. I was on Pierre, just sort of watching nearby when it happened. She was heading through the water towards the bank to jump up and he tripped himself a little. He looked okay after a few steps so she kept going. I guess he wasnt because right infront of the next jump (a split log, about 2'9), he sort of twisted his ankle and leapt awkwardly, making it over the first half of the oxer, but getting caught in the middle. If it were anything but cross country, the second rail would have just fallen, but sicne this rail was a foot thick and attached to the ground, it didnt work out like that. It was sort of all a blur, but from what I saw, I guess he landed with his front legs in between the jump (if you dont ride cross country, its a little difficult to explain, but basically the jump is in a V - shape and the rider can take the quicker route towards the tip of the V or the wider, slower, calmer route and hit the jump wide, and basically he got caught inbetween the two rails. Well his back end kept going and he sort of flipped his hindquarters over (sending my mom crashing into the second rail), and snapped his spine. The vet came and said that there was nothing we could do, he was basically paralized, but I guess with horses it works differently and it was more his spine would never heal fully and he would never move without a considerable amount of pain, so around 3 am we decided to put him down. Well the reason I havent been online in a while is becasue basically my mom has shut herself out of the world and she keeps blaming herself and I completely understand and everything, but it really wasnt her fault. Anyway, I felt I had to talk to someone about it, and I knew I could post here and feel safe that you guys would understand the greif our family is going through. It helps just knowing you guys are here for me...thanks again
