Okay so here is a funny story I thought I would share with you all...
Just to clairfy: Wesley is Lexi's son (Lexi is my connemara pony). He was about 8 months old when this happened. He is three now.
So one day Im up at the barn and I had just finished untacking Pierre and I was going to go put him away when I heard this weird noise. It sounded like someone got kicked out in the pasture, but I knew that was impossible becasue the only horses out right now were the babies and I knew they couldnt possibly make that much noise and commotion. Well whatever was making the noise had stopped so I didnt think too much about it as I put Pierre away.
About ten minutes later my cell rings and I check the caller ID. Its my mother. So I pick it up and she says that Wesley is in the front yard and I need to come get him. This wasnt that uncommon since he knew just about every trick in the book and was often escaping from every situation. He never drifted far so we didnt worry. Of course, we were very wrong not to worry. I walked out of the barn and expected to see four brightly colored foals grazing alongside thier mothers. However, all I saw was the open gates, the empty paddocks, Lexi standing in the middle looking unfazed, and the distinct shape of hoofprints in the mud telling me that about 8 horses were loose right now. I panicked and ran up to the house, noting that Wesley was now eating out of our planters.
Mom was out of the house in a flash as soon as I told her, grabbing her boots and phone on the way. My brothers, Gavin and Logan, both ran downstairs to help search. I tacked Pierre up and Gavin got in his truck, hoping to circle the property before the horses reached the road. Mom came with me on her horse Spunk. Logan volunteered to take care of Wesley and stay at the barn incase anyone came back.
So Mom and I split up to search the properties. I looked by all of the paddocks and the cross country course, but no one headed up that way. Mom came back empty handed as well. Gavin was successful and managed to locate Jules and Charisma, two boarding mares. The question was, where were the foals?
We brought the mares back, who were fairly panicked at this point from being away from thier foals for so long. And as we neared the barn, the funniest thing was happening. Logan was standing hopeless with lead ropes, trying to catch the horses (all of them had returned home at that point) while Wesley was trying sooo hard to round the foals up and corral them. What a stud.
Anyway...he's older now and he gets his own paddock with a double chain AND saftey twine just in case. He hasnt let anyone out since and for that, were grateful. It's hard enough to catch one horse. Let alone a whole stablefull.
